Networking Basics: Part 3

Routers and Switches

These hardware devices are essential to the running of networks.

It connects different networks together like, a router is used to connected your LAN (Local Area Network) to the internet. The router chooses the quickest route for your packets to be send over the internet so that your receive the information swiftly. Routers also have multiple capabilities such as: a firewall, which keeps network secure and VPN (Virtual Private Network), it is a private network that uses the internet to connect users together it also meaning that anyone intercepting the encrypted data can’t read it.

It has many ports which are used to connect devices in a LAN. This means that resources are shared across the LAN, for example anyone connected to that network can use the printer. There are two types of switches: Unmanaged switches, which are switches used at homes it simply allows devices to communicate with each other and Managed switches, which are switches that allow your to monitor network traffic, but it more costly.
